String Quartet At Ferris Hills Provides Private Concert, Sneak Preview

String Quartet At Ferris Hills Provides Private Concert, Sneak Preview

“Entertain, inspire, and nurture an appreciation for classical music”. This is the mission of the Geneva Music Festival organizers.

Residents of Ferris Hills were treated to these three tenets and more on Wednesday, May 24 during a special private concert, which was provided by one of the upcoming Festival’s featured acts.

String Quartet 1

The string quartet kicked off their summer concert season with a free preview performance for our community.  During the Geneva Music Festival (and beyond), the public will pay at least $25.00 per ticket to see the same performance which our residents enjoyed.

The quartet consists of Geoffrey Herd and Eliot Heaton, violins; Eric Wong, viola; and Max Geissler, cello. The group has performed in concert venues around the world, and is currently in the process of recording works for composers such as Narong Prangcharoen and Carter Pann.

String Quartet 2

These four musicians played to a full house while residents swayed in time with the melodic songs.  Concert attendees were treated to delightful pieces such as:

  • Haydn String Quartet in D Major, Op. 94 "The Lark"
  • John Corigliano Snapshot: Circa 1909
  • Schubert String Trio in B Flat Major  451, and
  • Dvorak String Quartet in F Major "American" Op. 95

In a senior living community that is renowned for high-quality healthcare and wellness, it makes perfect sense that Ferris Hills would provide this valuable community activity – music as therapy.

This quartet brought the gift of music to residents who cannot attend concerts, but certainly enjoy and appreciate the exposure to live music.  The enjoyment of the day went beyond the music – as the packed concert room was full of buoyant social interactions and conversation.

Listening to soothing music such as this has been proven to reduce tension, diminish pain, and improve recovery time.  It can improve memory recall and enhance cognitive awareness.

Lastly, listing to music promotes relaxation and is an instant mood-enhancer.

The dividends of bringing such an enjoyable activity to Ferris Hills go well beyond the audible entertainment.

If you’d like to follow the concert tour of this quartet or attend other renowned performances, take a look at the Geneva
Music Festival lineup at www.genevamusicfestival.com.

Ferris Hills and Clark Meadows Men's Group enjoys presentation by Tom Mees on Sonnenberg History

Ferris Hills resident Tom Mees recently gave a fascinating presentation on the history of Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park to our men's group.  With a deep appreciation for local history and a true gift for storytelling, Tom had the audience captivated by his knowledge of this local gem.

In addition to sharing historical insights, Tom enocuraged anyone interested in volunteering at Sonnenberg to get involved - help is always welcome!

One interesting question came up during the discussion: How did Sonnenberg get its name? Tom explained that "Sonnenberg," meaning Sunny Hill in German, was the postal name of the property when it was purchased.  Fittingly, the estate sits at the crest of Fort Hill Avenue.

Tom also shared the story of how Fred and Mary Thompson met: at Mary's father's farewell banquet ball in Albany, NY.  At the time, her father was serving as Governor of New York State.  It was love at first sight.  Just six months later, Fred and Mary were married in the Clark family home, located behind the United Church on Gibson Street.
